These Things Matter - LOTR
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Geoffrey Kent
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Samwise and Frodo

Whether you joined the quest as a kid reading the books, or with the rest of the world when the movie version of The Fellowship of The Ring came out, you’re probably familiar with The Lord of The Rings. Tolkien’s masterpiece is known far and wide as both a work of incredible lyricism and genius, and incredible silliness.

Perhaps you painted “FRODO LIVES” on a wall in 1971? Maybe you pretended to be a half-orc with your pals and some foam swords? Perhaps you just wished you could fine an elven cloak hidden somewhere in the back of your closet? However it came upon you, LOTR does not leave quickly. In fact, it lasts like 3-4 hours a movie!

Grab Gimli and Legolas and join us as we talk to actor, director and fight choreographer Geoffrey Kent about The LOTR… and let’s hunt some orc!

These Things Matter - Doctor Who

  • These Things Matter - Doctor Who

“Would you like a jelly baby?” Perhaps only on a quirky, wildly imaginative, extremely British show like Doctor Who could such a saying be a catch phrase, and yet there it is! From the Fourth Doctor to be exact.

Oh, what’s this now? You were unaware of the sci-fi/sci-fantasy show that’s been running for over 50 years (give or take a 13 year break) on the BBC? Since 1963, in fact? Where there have been 12 manifestations of the main character (13 if you count the War Doctor, which, of course you should count the War Doctor). My dear companion, you have so much to learn!

Join us as we talk to the Dudio himself, improviser, sketch comedian and Best Show producer, Jason Gore, all about his beloved Doctor Who. Do we end up going off on an hour and a half defense of the Sixth Doctor? No. No, of course we don’t. But if you’re a David Tennant fan, you might be in for a treat!

Also be sure to check out all our other episodes featuring Friends of Tom!

  • These Things Matter Podcast - Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from – or how you feel… There’s always peace in a strong cup of coffee.”

Although our guest, cartoonist Zak Kinsella, does not drink coffee, he gets how important it is to fellow comic book artists Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon. Zak talks about comics the way Gabriel and Fábio do. Comic books are their chosen catalysts. Modes of transportation. The means by which one is able to explore, elucidate and transcend the mundane world.

Join us as we talk about Gabriel and Fábio’s fantastical worlds, filled with heart and depth. And be sure to check out Zak’s fantastical heart-depth worlds in his comics on his website here!

  • These Things Matter Podcast - Elvis Presley

Jim Norris is a Denver treasure. He’s the owner of 3 Kings Tavern and Mutiny Information Cafe, two of the best venues/stores/coffee shops/bars/pinball arcades/green rooms in all of Denver. Jim is also an Elvis Presley fanatic, as the black velvet painting hanging at 3 Kings will attest. Jim has been a hip-shakin’, side burn-admiring, Elvis glasses tattoo-having devotee since he was a little kid, and we have tons of fun talking all about The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with the King of South Broadway.

Slip on your blue suede shoes kids and jump on in!

These Things Matter Podcast - Mark Mothersbaugh
  • These Things Matter - Paper Bird
  • These Things Matter Podcast - DEVO

It was such a treat talking to musician Genevieve Patterson about Devo. As a member of Paper Bird and Harpoontang, Genny is an integral part of the Denver music scene. She chats with us about lots of big, artistic ideas inspired by her visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s MYOPIA exhibition of Mark Mothersbaugh’s art. She goes so far as to say that Miley Cyrus is the manifestation of Devo’s artistic ambitions. Yeah, you gotta hear this.

Be sure to catch Genny with Paper Bird all over the place! A great place to start to get to know the band is with friend of the show Kiernan Maletsky’s recent Westword cover article!

  • These Things Matter Podcast - The Velveteen Rabbit

For the 3rd time in a row, Kevin and Taylor sit down with mugs of alcoholic beverages (hot toddies, to be exact) and chat about nothing in particular. This year we decided to forgo singing as we figure we can only torture our listeners so much. Happy Holidays to all and a Merry Pop Culture Year to you and your loved ones!

These Things Matter Podcast - Led Zeppelin
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Tom Scharpling
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Led Zeppelin

Holy moly. Jeepers Creepers. You guys. You guys. It’s TOM SCHARPLING talking LED ZEPPELIN. Talk about good guys winning!

As host of The Best Show on WFMU and as the host of the forthcoming independently produced Best Show, Mr. Scharpling has preached the gospel of Jimmy Page and company for years. We were so honored and excited to have him on the show talking Zep, talking Lord of The Rings, and even throwing in a Beatles unfair record review for good measure! We’re all buying the stairway to heaven with this one, guys.

Be sure to catch the new Best Show on, and grab yourself a Scharpling and Wurster box set from Numero Group! Taylor’s already got her piece of Jon Wurster’s infamous telephone!

These Things Matter Podcast - Dinosaurs

  • These Things Matter Podcast - Dinosaurs

We were so thrilled to have musician (and old school chum of Taylor’s) Ian Cooke on the show today! His new album, Antiquasauria, arrives Spring of 2015. It’s all about dinosaurs, so of course we’ve gotta talk Dinosaurs! Jurassic Park, to be sure, but also The Land Before Time, Dinotopia, Land of The Lost, Dinosaurs the TV show, King Kong, Clash of the Titans, Denver The Last Dinosaur, and most obscure, Taylor’s favorite library album “Dinosaur Rock”!

Check Ian’s website here for all your Ian Cooke needs, and be sure to catch him around Denver (and the country) to hear some serious cello-centric prog rock goodness.

These Things Matter Podcast - Celebrity Chefs
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Danny Palumbo
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Anthony Bourdain

Comedian Danny Palumbo hails from Pennsylvania, but really you could say he hails from the kitchen. He’s been in the shit with the best of them. Sautéing, grilling, seasoning, stirring, grinding, simmering all the live long day as a line cook. His kitchen experience has given him insight into the world of celebrity chefs and the artistry of food. Bourdain, Lagasse, Batali, Ramsey, Oliver, Child and Fieri. Yes Fieri. Are we saying Guy Fieri is an artist? I mean, perhaps an artist in the medium of grease? We hope you’re hungry!

Check out Danny’s fake gourmet kid’s restaurant, Lil’ Buco, and catch him when he comes to tell jokes in your town!
