These Things Matter Podcast - Grateful Dead
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Andy Kindler
  • These Things Matter Podcast - The Grateful Dead

Our guest comedian Andy Kindler has been in a lot of stuff. He’s had multiple appearances on Letterman, he plays Mort the Mortician on Bob’s Burgers, ‘Andy Kindler’ on Maron, Andy on Everybody Loves Raymond, and perhaps our favorite Arnold Lindenson on Home Movies. What a coup!

Join us as we ramble around music, politics and other topics, mostly hitting upon the Grateful Dead. Is there talk of Pig Pen, Tom Scharpling and The Best Show? Of course there is! This is a meandering episode, kiddos, but isn’t it great to just come along for the ride, maaaaannnn? Let’s just keep truckin’ on.

These Things Matter Podcast - Karaoke
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Josh Androsky
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Karaoke

Josh Androsky is a force with which to be reckoned. He and his girlfriend rolled up to Casa de TTMP after road tripping from Arizona and he was hot on the mic from the get-go! What charisma! What enthusiasm! What a Karaoke machine this man is.

Join us as we discuss the importance of a good karaoke song, how not to be a douche, and whether or not your are worthy of the Joy Dictator’s benevolence.

You can catch Josh all over these United States and especially L.A. AND at the upcoming Jokeoke show at the VooDoo Comedy Playhouse on Sunday, June 1st at 10pm.

So we decided we wanted to give you a taste of another podcast from one of our favorite folks, Mr. Jason Sims. We mentioned that we recorded this episode before, but we wanted to make sure you guys heard it. Jason is a regular caller to The Best Show on WFMU as well as a podcaster and generally hilarious gentleman. He was kind enough, along with his producer (friend of the show) Nowah Jacobs to ask Taylor to guest host his show, and Taylor was kind enough to ask your ole pal Kevin to be on her episode.

What follows is a conversation between friends who usually only discuss the merits of the latest comedian, movie, television episode or album that they are into. We can actually talk about other stuff, you guys! We hope you enjoy the show, and do go check out more episodes of Jason Sims Puts You In Your Place over at Slice Radio! His guests have included Andy Kindler, Tom Scharpling, Ted Leo and Julie Klausner!

Jason Sims, Alabammy Comet, Improvisor, Humorist, and Super Caller to The Best Show on WFMU, has a podcast on Slice Radio called Jason Sims Puts You In Your Place. This summer, Jason has been having guest hosts take over his seat, and Taylor was lucky enough to be one of the chosen few!

Listen in as she talks to our own Kevin O’Brien about growing up in Nebraska, doing stand-up in St. Louis, and our fair city of Denver, Colorado. If you haven’t yet, you should listen to other eps of the show too. Jason has spoken with Tom Scharpling, Andy Kindler, Ted Leo, John Hodgman, and any number of other awesome and interesting folks!

Here’s the link to the show website, and here’s the show on iTunes… oh and here’s Jason on Twitter!

These Things Matter Podcast Rock Documentaries
  • These Things Matter - Goodrich Gevart
  • These Things Matter Podcast - Daniel Johnston

Goodrich Gevaart is an up-and-coming Chicago comedian, making his way in the world to day and whatnot. He recently came to Denver for a string of successful comedy-type rambling shows, in the middle of which he stopped by TTMP headquarters for a chat about one of his favorite subjects – rock documentaries. Is it the allure of the rockstar lifestyle that draws him into the genre? Is it the groupies? The drugs? The human-sex-having sharks? Turns out it’s all of that and more! Join us as we get in the van and hit the road.

For more Rock Doc info, check out Pitchfork’s guide to 20 Free Rock Docs on the internet. And as a fellow fan of The Best Show on WFMU, Goodrich is certainly aware of Jon Wurster’s vast knowledge of and love for rock docs. Here is Jon’s list of docs to see from the AV Club. Not to mention this Kickstarter campaign run by WFMU’s Robert Hatch-Miller to fund a rock doc about legendary soul man Syl Johnson!

  • These Things Matter - Maggie Serota
  • These Things Matter - Joy Division

The Low Times/TTMP lovefest continues with the fantastic Maggie Serota! Maggie chats with us about her love of the Manchester lads Ian, Peter, Bernard and Stephen, how depressing music can help when you’re feeling depressed, aka Being a Teenager, and how dance music doesn’t have to be stupid.

DO be sure to check out her podcast, Low Times, where she recently interviewed Peter Hook FROM JOY DIVISION/NEW ORDER! Insanity. (Thanks to Mindy Tucker for the pic of Maggie.)

These Things Matter - Radiohead
  • These Things Matter - Daniel Ralston
  • These Things Matter - Radiohead

What can we say about this episode? Though at times it sounds like Daniel is a subterranean homesick alien, what with the Skype and all, it was so awesome to talk about a band that has meant so much to our generation… and it was so great to talk about them with Daniel Ralston, co-host, co-creator, co-editor for one of the best music podcasts out there, Low Times.

Daniel came out of the gate with a bold statement about when Radiohead started to suck, and we explore that suckage – Is he correct? Do they still suck? Did they ever suck? When did the sucking commence? Suck, suck, suck.

Grab your paranoid android and let’s find out!

  • These Things Matter - Nowah Jacobs
  • These Things Matter - Shakespeare

And now truly get pretentious… it’s Shakespeare day! To theatre people like Nowah Jacobs and Taylor, this is all old hat, but Kevin seems to have experienced the beginnings of class warfare within himself during the episode. Can a (somewhat) mild mannered fella from the heart of the country convince two academic know-it-alls that Shakespeare is for crap?! Listen as we discuss our pals Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Hamlet, Othello, Titus… and find out!

Nowah is a DJ on Indiana’s WFHB and he produces one of our favorite non-podcast podacasts, Jason Sims is Calling You. He’s a swell fella, and we had a great time talking to him. Hope you enjoy!

These Things Matter Podcast - Mixtapes
  • These Things Matter - Robert Rutherford
  • These Things Matter - Mix Tapes

What can we say about Robert Rutherford? He is Kevin’s Spirit Animal. He is Taylor’s personal music guru. To know Robert is to love him, for realzies, and we hope you guys enjoy getting to know him through his mix tape selections on this episode. I mean, how can you not love a guy who makes a mix tape for his mom?! (recreated here).

We talk to Robert about how he fell in love with his partner over mix tapes, and how the art of the mix tape might be transforming rather than dying out. If you want to hear more from Robert, and of course you do, check out his monthly storytelling show The Narrators which he co-hosts with friend of the show Andrew Orvedahl every 3rd Thursday of the month at Deer Pile. And be sure to listen to The Narrators Podcast as well, especially episodes 15 and 16 on which you can hear both Taylor and Kevin tell stories!
